We Won Second Place at UC Berkeley’s Hack for Impact

10/27/2025

Our project, NeuralNurse, helps people with dementia remember the faces of people they love. We built it with a Raspberry Pi, a camera, and a microphone. It uses YOLO and OpenCV to recognize faces and speech-to-text to understand words.

Here’s how it works: when it sees a familiar face, it says the person’s name and their relationship, like “Hi Mary, I’m Peter, your son.” This small reminder can help someone with memory loss feel more connected and confident.

We wanted to show that tech can be caring. This project taught us a lot about teamwork, problem-solving, and empathy. Winning second place felt great, but what matters most is that we built something that could really help people.

Winning second place was exciting, but what mattered more was seeing how technology can be used with care and empathy. We learned a lot — about teamwork, about design, and about building something that feels human.
